| 2 | 8888.0078.0000.00 | documents | Howard I. Chapelle Research complied by Dr. Joann | Range, Cir 01/01/1930 - 12/31/1975 | Howard I. Chapelle Research complied by Dr. Joann King<CR><CR>This collection is composed of Joann King's personal research notes as she prepared her doctoral dissertation about the life and work of Howard I. Chapelle. Correspondence between Chapelle and various individuals regarding ship building, his publications, his work at the Smithsonian Institution, as well as personal matters are included. Also included are letters between King and Chapelle's wife, Zayma and stepdaughter, Anne, as well as correspondence with many other individuals seeking specific biographical information about him. Chapelle's publications, book reviews written about his works, various newspaper and magazine articles discussing his work, thorough information regarding the Historic American Merchant Marine Survey (HAMMS), and other miscellaneous research materials used for King's dissertation are also found in this collection. Background InformationHoward I. Chapelle (1901-1975) was born in Massachusetts and briefly attended the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, but received no more professional training or education. In the 1930s he started his own business of designing small craft including fishing boats and yachts. As the Great Depression continued, Chapelle became the New England regional director of the Historic American Merchant Marine Survey (HAMMS), a Works Progress Administration program designed to record vital information and plans of historic ships throughout the United States. During World War II, Chapelle was a Captain in the U.S. Army and worked in the Office of the Chief of Transportation. In 1950 Chapelle received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study American Naval Architecture at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. In the mid 1950s, Chapelle lived briefly in Turkey and worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as a consultant on fishing boat design. In 1957, Chapelle began working at the Smithsonian Institution as the Curator of Transportation. He retired from the Smithsonian in 1971, but continued to write, design ships, and receive mail from boat builders seeking his professional opinion until his death. Throughout his career, Chapelle published a dozen books and numerous articles regarding boat building, and histories and in-depth information regarding certain craft. Wife, Alice Zayma Chapelle (now deceased), and stepdaughter Anne Appleton survived him. In 1983, Joann King, a PhD candidate at the George Washington University contacted Zayma Chapelle, informing her that she would be writing her dissertation about the life and work of her late husband, Howard I. Chapelle. The above biographical information about Chapelle is directly taken from King's research materials that she donated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in May 2002.For material collected directly from Howard I. | 3 | 8888.0028.0000.00 | documents | M. V. Brewington Collection: 1930s-1950s | Range, Cir 01/01/1930 - 12/31/1950 | Part of this collection is in CSC FF 60.M. V. Brewington Collection:1930s-1950sThe collection is comprised of correspondence, research notes, ship plans, Yachting articles, newspaper clippings, draft manuscripts, and photographs concerned with Brewington's Chesapeake Bay related publications.Biographical BackgroundMarion Vernon Brewington was born at Salisbury, Maryland, on 23 June 1902 and died on 8 December 1974. As a youth, he worked as a hand on Chesapeake Bay vessels. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1925, he worked as a banker in Philadelphia. With the onset of World War II, in 1942 he was commissioned in the Naval Reserve and served in the Navy Department's Naval Records and Library. After the war he held the position of Acting Curator of the Naval Historical Foundation in Washington and Curator of the maritime collections at the Maryland Historical Society. In 1956 he assumed the posts of Assistant Director and Curator of Maritime History at the Peabody Museum of Salem, Massachusetts. In 1966 he accepted the Directorship of the Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, Massachusetts. He retired in the summer of 1974 to work on a cataloguing project at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Connecticut. A prolific writer, he produced some of the most important works on Chesapeake Bay maritime boatbuilding and history. The American Neptune, XXXV:1 (January 1975)Scope and ContentThe collection represents Brewington's research methods. The range and type of material reflects the author's meticulous search for details regarding all aspects of the Chesapeake Bay's vernacular watercraft and shipping. The majority of information was collected during the period 1930-1950, though some documents exceed this date. Many of the documents, newspaper abstracts, and notes examine general information regarding eighteenth- and nineteenth-century shipbuilding and maritime commerce. Most of the correspondence deals specifically with information regarding late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Chesapeake Bay vessels. The ship plans preserve specific designs of Chesapeake Bay related watercraft. Subject: Marion V Brewington | No image URL. | View | |||

| 5 | 8888.0071.0000.00 | documents | Joseph Liener Papers<CR><CR>Background<CR>Joseph Liener | Range, Cir 01/01/1909 - 01/01/2002 | This collection begins on CSC 15C1 and continues on 15C2.Joseph Liener PapersBackgroundJoseph Liener (Sept 1909-Jan 2002) was a long-time, dedicated volunteer at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. He was born in Salem, NJ, and in 1938 married Lillian England, the daughter of a Baptist minister of Alloway, NJ.As a young man Liener worked as an apprentice to several Salem house builders, becoming so proficient as to be entrusted with all their cabinet work. His life-long interest in wooden boats led to his employment before World War II as a civilian at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where he ultimately became one of only three rated Senior Supervisors at the yard. He supervised the construction of all wooden boats built at the navy yard including mine sweepers, motor launches, yard boats, captain's gigs, and Naval Academy sloops. As part of this work he sought out special woods, selected specific trees to be cut and taken to lumber yards to be sawed to his specifications for the navy's shop work.In 1942 Liener joined the navy as a Petty Officer First Class. He was assigned to the South Pacific where he supervised the repair of damaged landing craft and assault ships. As the war ended he was stationed at Eniwetok where early atomic bombs were being tested. After the war he returned to the small craft shop at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until his retirement on 31 Oct 1969.As a volunteer at the museum Liener was instrumental in the conservation, restoration, and documentation of vessels in the small boat collection. The museum's catalog of that collection, A Heritage in Wood (St. Michaels: CBMM, 1992) is dedicated to Liener. Lines drawings of historic craft prepared by Liener are in the ships plans collection. During this period Liener became a friend of James Michener and gave him information about the bay and the watermen; Michener asked Liener to comment on a draft of Michener's book Chesapeake for which Liener provided written comments (see Box 7, folder 10).Among Liener's many avocations was making fine furniture for the house he built himself, carving decoys for his own use, playing the piano, organ, and violin, designing, building, painting, and sailing his catboat Buxom Lass. He maintained a longtime interest in catboats and was active in the national catboat association and one of the founders of the Chesapeake Bay Catboat Association. Liener's papers and other material was donated to the museum by Lillian Liener prior to her death in 2003.Scope and ContentA large part of this collection consists of correspondence Liener received from many friends and contacts. Much of the correspondence is personal, but many letters are from individuals who ask for information about all kinds of vessels, especially catboats. Among his correspondents was James Michener who asked for Liener's comments on a draft of his book Chesapeake, naval architects Lowndes Johnson and Edward Brownlee, author John Leavens, editor of The Catboat Book (Camden, ME: International Marine Pub. Co., 1973), and Dave Dillon of the Wooden Boat School and co-author of Boats A Manual for Their Documentation (Nashville: American Association for State and Local History and the Museum Small Craft Association, 1993).Sub'ectsAcademy of Natural Sciences Bermuda Maritime Museum Boston's Museum of Transportation Calvert Marine Museum CatboatsChesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Decoy CarversDecoysHistorical Society of Talbot County Morton Smith, naval architect Mystic Seaport Museum Philadelphia Maritime Museum Philadelphia Naval Shipyard Boat Shop Philadelphia Ship Model Society The Apprentice ShopGeneral Correspondence (Filed alphabetically & by date within each name)Acton, Charles L.Adler, Georgia, Historical Society of Talbot County Allen, Roger & MichelleBossett, Robert H., Matawan, Aberdeen Regional School DistrictBrous, N. | 7 | 8888.0111.0000.00 | manuscript | Thomas Gillmer Manuscript Collection | This collection begins on CSC 16B2 and continues onto CSC 16B3.Background:Thomas Gillmer (1911-2009) was a naval architect whose designs include both historic vessels and cruising sailboats. He is perhaps best known for his work on the Baltimore clippers Pride of Baltimore and Pride of Baltimore II, the former having attracted national attention when she tragically sank off Puerto Rico in 1986 ( the subsequent investigation determined extreme weather rather than poor design or seamanship was at fault). Gillmer's other historical designs include the pungy schooner Lady Maryland and the Swedish pinnace ship Kalmar Nyckel. His cruising sailboats, in both wood and fiberglass, are also respected as elegant and seaworthy vessels. One, an Allied Seawind named Apogee, was the first fiberglass boat to circumnavigate the globe. In addition to his work as an architect, Gillmer wrote several books and articles on subjects ranging from ancient watercraft to the restoration of the USS Constitution, a project in which he was involved. Gillmer was a professor of naval architecture at the US Naval Academy and later served on the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's Board of Governors and as chairman of the curatorial committee.
